How to Clean Your MDF Wall Panels Safely

How to Clean Your MDF Wall Panels Safely

Installing beautiful wall panels is one of the easiest ways to give your space a modern, elevated look — but keeping them clean is just as important. At Decora, our slatted panels are crafted with a wood veneer finish on an MDF core, backed with PET felt for acoustic performance and added texture.

To help your panels look their best for years to come, here’s a quick guide to cleaning them safely — without risking warping, staining, or damaging the materials.

1. Dust Regularly

Dust is the enemy of any interior surface — and panels are no exception.

Use a:

  • Microfibre cloth

  • Feather duster

  • Soft-bristle brush

This helps prevent build-up and keeps your panels looking sharp without the need for frequent deep cleaning.

Tip: Run your cloth along the slats in the direction of the grain for best results.

2. Light Marks or Everyday Smudges

For occasional fingerprints or light grime:

  • Dampen a soft cloth slightly with warm water and a tiny drop of mild dish soap

  • Wring it out well — it should feel just damp, not wet

  • Gently wipe the affected area

  • Immediately dry the panel with a clean, dry cloth

MDF is absorbent and can swell or warp if overexposed to moisture, so avoid letting water sit on the surface.

3. Tackling Grease or Tougher Stains

If you’re dealing with stubborn marks (like from cooking or kids’ fingers), try a natural vinegar solution:

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water (50:50)

  • Lightly dampen a cloth (don’t soak it)

  • Test the solution on a hidden area first

  • Wipe gently, then dry the surface immediately

Avoid any harsh chemical sprays, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners, as these can damage the veneer finish or discolour the PET felt backing.

What to Avoid

To protect your panels and keep them looking their best:

  • Don’t spray water or cleaner directly onto the panel

  • Avoid rough sponges or scouring pads

  • Never use steam cleaners or high-moisture methods

  • Keep solvents, alcohols, and chemical cleaners far away

Caring for the PET Felt Backing

The soft felt behind the slats is made from durable recycled PET, designed to absorb sound while looking sleek.

To clean it:

  • Use a lint roller, handheld vacuum, or soft brush

  • For light marks, a slightly damp cloth is okay — just be gentle

  • Avoid soaking or scrubbing the felt, as this may affect its acoustic performance

Final Thoughts

With the right care, your Decora panels will continue to elevate your space with style and function for years to come. Keep moisture to a minimum, dust often, and go gentle on any cleaning — and they’ll look as beautiful as the day they were installed.
